A Sunny Outlook for Garfield’s Summer 2017 Interns Posted by Alexa Hunt Aug 15 2017 All It’s that time of year again at Garfield. We’re looking up autumn crockpot recipes on Pinterest and making the most of the time we have left with our talented summer interns, who are gearing up to go back to school for their last few semesters. It’s never easy to say “Goodbye” to a young designer who creates a stunning audience research infographic or a strategy wonk who helps us plan our social media calendars, but we couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to work with these future advertising pros. Here’s what they had to say about the experience: Marisa Cariola, Graphic Design Intern 22 | New Hope | Temple University | Graphic Design How did you first hear about Garfield Group? I found out about the graphic design internship through a school service. What influenced you to apply? Admittedly, I was first intrigued by this position because it was so close to my house. Upon further exploration of Garfield website, it looked like the perfect place for me to experience what agency life is like and expand my skills to a variety of projects. Describe a typical day for you at Garfield Group. After a 20-minute commute that feels like an hour due to all the tractors and busses, it is nice to have a group of people who can make you laugh and brighten your work day. I normally get a variety of projects to work on and enjoy the opportunity to collaborate with a lot of different people in the company. It’s been gratifying to see how a large group of people can collaborate to accomplish a goal. My ‘Create Brand Action’ Moment I think I gained a better insight into the agency environment versus being an in-house designer for a brand. I appreciate how there are levels and specific people for each part of every project. I enjoy how thoroughly each step of every project is handled — everyone’s job is equally important and everyone's opinions are respected. What ‘G’ Did for Me I learned a lot of helpful tips and resources that I am excited to use during my upcoming senior semester, and have been able to add some really cool client work to my portfolio. My Garfield coworkers also convinced me to watch The Princess Bride for the first time — and that, in itself, was kind of life-changing. MovinG Forward I’m excited to start my senior year at the Tyler School of Art at Temple. I’ve learned a lot of useful insights into my future career and kept my skills in tune during my time at Garfield. Tips for Aspiring Garfield Interns The people you’ll be working with all have unique experience, so take advantage of that! Ask for advice, because your fellow employees have probably gone through the same things you are, and they’ll likely have some helpful tips. ‘Perception-Changing’ Motivation “Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed” – Alexander Pope Sometimes the ideas you think are the best are not chosen. Sometimes an idea you think is bland can transform into something amazing. It is best not to get too attached or expect anything specific, because everything can change in a moment. If you can roll with the punches and adapt, you’ll find success and learn something new in the process. Mellisa Harris, Strategy/Account Intern 25 | Philadelphia, PA | Temple University | Advertising: Account Manager How did you first hear about Garfield Group? I first saw the Garfield Group hiring post on my school website (SMC-Simplicity). What influenced you to apply? I knew I wanted an internship during the summer, so I started to look for internships that could fit my interests and provide real-life experience. After I saw that Garfield was hiring a strategy intern, I did some research on their website and on Glassdoor. I liked what I saw, so I decided to apply. Describe a typical day for you at Garfield Group. I feel like I’ve done so much in such little time — on any given day at Garfield, I get to experience what it’s like to be an account coordinator. I have been in meetings with clients, completed competitive analysis reports, worked with the copy team, done some PR research, helped plan out social posts, and even led a meeting. There’s never a boring day here! My ‘Create Brand Action’ Moment My moment of truth was running an internal review meeting for Garfield Group. I forgot that I was responsible for this meeting and was caught off-guard when I was told to discuss what the meeting was about. I quickly got myself together and explain why half the Garfield staff came together for this meeting. It gave me perspective on what an entry level account person would do to prepare for such situations! What ‘G’ Did for Me This internship has definitely kept me busy, from working on competitive analyses by myself to sitting in on client meetings. It has taught me so much about my future career and what to expect going forward. I still remember in my interview I talked about getting real-life experiences — this is exactly what I got. MovinG Forward From here, it’s all about finishing my degree and starting a career in marketing and advertising. I’ve enjoyed the internship experience so much, I’m even more excited to dig deeper into the field as a professional. Tips for Aspiring Garfield Interns My tips for aspiring Garfield interns is go in with a positive attitude and don't be afraid to ask for help — you’re there to learn, and everyone is very friendly and wants to see you succeed! ‘Perception-Changing’ Motivation “Don't cry because it's over.
