Introducing our 2019 Holiday Fundraising Partner: Urban Tree Connection

Posted by Larry Garfield

This year, we’ve chosen to partner with the Urban Tree Connection for our annual holiday program. Since 1997, this non-profit has transformed over 29 vacant lots in West Philadelphia into green spaces, gardens and a community farm that creates over 6,500 pounds of chemical-free produce every year.

About the Urban Tree Connection.

But UTC does much more than provide an abundance of healthy, fresh produce. They also engage with the community to govern its resources together, creating a much stronger and healthier community. What’s more, it provides all of its produce at no charge — encouraging teamwork as well as providing a resource for healthy foods in a neighborhood known for being a food desert — an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food.

We did a little farm work ourselves.

On November 15th, 20 hearty Garfielders spent time working the land alongside UTC leaders, clearing away trash, preparing garden beds for winter, and learning more about what UTC is all about.  We’ve included a few photos here of us in action.

Help us keep the dream — and Philly — strong and healthy.

Together, Garfield and Urban Tree Connection have set a goal to raise $18,000 before the end of the year to help cover ongoing farming, irrigation and utility costs. (Just $5 grows 500 green beans!).
