7 Questions with Sara Heckman Posted by Lailumah Faisal Jul 17 2020 All We are excited to officially welcome our newest associate account executive: Sara Heckman. Prior to joining the Garfield Group full time, Sara blossomed into the account team’s all-star intern. In those months, she gained hands-on experience in client relations and project management and took her marketing and leadership skills to new heights. We sat down with Sara for a tell-all interview. And now, we’d like to share her brilliance with you: What did you study in college and why did you choose that major? I graduated from Temple University with a BBA in marketing. I went into college as an undeclared business major. But after exploring some student organizations, I realized how much I enjoyed marketing. I was heavily involved in Temple’s American Marketing Association and joined the executive board my senior year as the director of membership administration. In my position, I was responsible for the recruitment of all 250+ members — processing applications, managing dues, taking weekly attendance, and creating “bomb” excel sheets. How did you hear about the Garfield Group? Someone from my club tennis team introduced me to Garfield Group and a few people at the agency. I was looking for my first internship and applied to Garfield for summer 2019 and got the job! I returned to the agency in February 2020 to serve my second term as the account and strategy intern. And here I am today. What has the transition been like going from an intern to a full-time employee during a pandemic? What is your favorite part of your job? The transition has been really smooth. As an intern, I got a lot of “non-interny” responsibilities, which primed me to become a full-time employee. Not many recent graduates get to say they’ve done client-facing work. So I’m really grateful for the experience Garfield Group gave me. As for my role, I’m obsessed with keeping things organized — I have multiple planners, monthly and daily lists. Seriously: I have several calendars. So being able to translate my obsession into my work at GG with clients just makes me happy. What advice would you give undergraduate students looking for jobs or internships now? Keep going and don’t give up! Given these uncertain times, it’s easy to lose focus. My advice is not to let the crazy stuff going on in the world knock you off of your personal path. Even though job searching is difficult right now, continue to apply, reach out to people in your network, and improve your skill set. Also, look nice for those online interviews. Gotta dress to ~impress~. How do you see the industry changing in the next 5–10 years? It’s been really interesting to see how this industry has gone 100% remote over the last four months. I can see the advertising and marketing industry keeping some of the practices its developed throughout this pandemic — especially working from home and affording the convenience it’s given many of us. What’s the most binge-worthy show on Netflix right now? Easy...Schitt’s Creek. Do you have a TikTok? If yes, will you teach the office some TikTok dances when we get back? Yes, I have a Tik Tok and only if everyone 100% agrees to do them.
