Nearly 150 pounds of non-perishable food donated, single-handedly exceeding food drive goals

Newtown, Pa. – May 29, 2014 – Innovative full-service marketing agency Garfield Group provided the largest donation of food to a May Philabundance food drive sponsored by the Philadelphia Business Journal and Sun Federal Credit Union.

Garfield staffers delivered more than 100 pounds of canned and boxed food to Center City Philadelphia on May 21 – singlehandedly exceeding the food drive’s goal of 50 pounds of non-perishable food in 90 minutes and completely filling the collection box. In all, the food drive collected 265 pounds.

“We enjoy working with clients who are social innovators – whose products or services make the world a better place – and decided to get involved, too,” Garfield Group Founder and President Larry Garfield said. “Hunger, unfortunately, is a problem that persists locally, nationwide and worldwide.”

There are 1.8 million people suffering from hunger each day in Pennsylvania and about 562,000 of those people are children, according to Feeding America. In Philadelphia alone, one of every four residents are at risk for hunger – more than double the rates reported at both the national and Pennsylvania state level.

While it’s already a challenge for many to get enough food each day, the recent cuts to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have made it even more difficult.

Philabundance is the region’s largest hunger relief organization. It provides emergency food and access to services to about 900,000 people. The organization distributed 30 million pounds of food in in its fiscal 2013 through a network of nearly 500 member agencies.

“We can’t stress how vital a role Philabundance plays in our community and are always excited to work with a great organization,” Philadelphia Business Journal Audience Development Director Brian Wiggins said. “And we can’t thank Garfield Group enough for helping us to meet our goals in one fell swoop.”

“Our collection box went from nearly empty to full in just a few minutes when Garfield Group wheeled in stacks of boxes and cans,” said Francesca Vogel, Director of Business Development for Sun Federal Credit Union. “It was great to see the community support such a worthy cause and the Credit Union was glad to provide the location to do so.”
